In the school environment, there are many difficulties that can result in a negative impact on students' performance in educational activities and in classroom interactions, in interactions between students and teachers. It is in this context that this article aims to analyze the evolution of the school curriculum over the decades, emphasizing the need to adapt to the demands of different social groups, with a special focus on the riverside dwellers of the Brazilian Legal Amazon. The discussion covers the importance of environmental education and sustainability as essential components of the contemporary curriculum. Based on a literature review, this study is based on Brazilian authors who address the curricular theme, emphasizing the relevance of an inclusive and contextualized education, as it is based on the conjecture that the construction of a curriculum that dialogues with the reality of the riverside dwellers and that includes environmental education and sustainability is essential for the implementation of educational policies. Only in this way will it be possible to form conscious and critical citizens, capable of contributing to the preservation of the rich environmental heritage of the Amazon. Thus, there is a need for a critical reflection on the need for a curriculum that not only informs, but also transforms and respects the cultural and social diversities of Brazil, especially in the context of the Amazonian riverside dwellers.
